Specialty shooting activities are based on range availability. Pinecrest adventures are planned within staff guidelines.
This is not your typical week at camp
Built for Scouts ages 13 to 21 who want more challenge, more independence, and experiences you won’t find during a regular summer camp session.
Advanced shooting sports
Spend the week rotating through advanced shooting sports, including rifle, shotgun, archery, cowboy action, and specialty activities based on range availability. With three Scouts per instructor, every participant gets real, focused coaching, not just a demo and a turn in line.
Real rock climbing
Learn real climbing skills and practice lead climbing techniques at camp. Hands-on instruction and a low 3-to-1 ratio mean you spend your time climbing and building skills, not waiting for a turn on the wall.
Plan your own Pinecrest
adventure
Midweek, you and your crew plan and execute your own Pinecrest adventure within staff guidelines. You build the plan, pitch it, and carry it out. It is a real chance to lead, make decisions, and own the outcome together.
Evenings with the camp classics
Evenings still bring the camp classics: campfires, stargazing at the observatory, black powder shooting, board games, and time with friends. The days are built for teens who want independence, challenge, and ownership over their own adventure.

FAQs: Your Questions Answered
Got questions about Venturing Week? Here are the answers to what parents and scouts ask most, from cost and badges to transportation. Still have questions? Reach out anytime.
When is it?
Sunday, June 27 to Saturday, July 3, 2027, at Camp Hi-Sierra near Pinecrest Lake.
Who can attend?
Registered Scouts and Venturers ages 13 to 21. You don’t need to be in a Venturing crew or come with your unit. Scouts can come on their own or with friends.
What will we do?
Advanced shooting sports (rifle, shotgun, archery, cowboy action and specialty shoots, depending on range availability) and real climbing instruction, including lead climbing technique. Midweek, each crew plans its own Pinecrest adventure within staff guidelines, pitches the plan to staff and carries it out. Evenings are still regular camp: campfires, observatory nights, black powder shooting and board games.
Is this a merit badge week?
No. The week is built around adventure and skills, not a class schedule. It is a provisional program, so Scouts can still work on merit badges and rank during the week.
How big are the groups?
Three participants per instructor. Enrollment is kept small on purpose, so register early.
What does it cost?
Price per youth:
Paid in full by April 14, 2027: $800
Through May 13, 2027: $850
Starting May 14, 2027: $900
The round-trip bus adds $50. Payment schedule: $250 by Feb. 15, $250 by April 14, and the balance by May 14.
Can adults come?
Yes, as extra supervisors: $450, or $275 for the supervisory adult role. This is a youth-led week, and the Scouts plan and lead their own activities.
Is transportation available?
Yes. Add the round-trip bus from the San Jose Scout office (1900 The Alameda) when you register.
Is financial help available?
Yes. The council offers camperships for Scouts with financial need.
What health forms are needed?
The Annual Health and Medical Record, Parts A, B and C, in CampDoc before camp. Paper forms are not accepted.
What should I bring?
Everything on the standard Camp Hi-Sierra packing list, plus hiking clothes, layers for cold mountain mornings, sturdy closed-toe shoes, a water bottle and a daypack.
